NDIS cooking classes and private sessions

NDIS cooking classes in Brisbane

Hi and welcome to our welcoming, friendly and fun NDIS cooking groups and private sessions. I love to encourage culinary confidence, creativity and independence in the kitchen (as well as providing a safe space for building friendships along the way!).

Our Brisbane cooking classes are all held at our purpose-built teaching kitchen in The Gap, Brisbane with wheel-chair accessability and a specific, height adjustable table.

Our cooking groups are social, welcoming and practical-skills based.

We work on new meals and work out menus together. We encourage trying new foods and build on skills of food preparation, presentation, shopping, food safety and kitchen hygiene.

Currently our uniquely small NDIS specific cooking groups are; kids after-school Mondays, adults Tuesday or Wednesday mornings and teens on Saturday mornings

  • Behaviour expectations required; respectful, kind, safe and inclusive. Classes are held at a slow-medium pace with turn-taking and listening to instructions needed.

  • These are stand-up lessons to replicate the reality of being a chef and move about easily in the room but if this is an issue, a stool can be provided. *Please note there is also a new, wheelchair-friendly kitchen bench that can be used by up to 2 participants.

  • Aprons are only worn by one participant  (please feel free to bring your own), surfaces are regularly disinfected and hands are frequently washed and dried with single use paper towel.

  • Participants just need to bring 2 plastic containers and a drink bottle. They will take home all food made and students need to arrive 5 mins early with enclosed shoes on and long hair tied back.

  • Class sizes are always kept small to be uniquely hands-on with kitchen skills to practice.

  • Dietary requirements must be disclosed at time of booking and please also request a vegetarian option at this time.

  • Classes can be a mix of age ranges and abilities, though groups can be targetted at specific age ranges.

  • Support workers/Parents are very welcome to stay and assist if need be.

Please fill in ‘Register Interest’ form link above or click the individual class link to express interest in joining a group . These friendly classes are run specifically for kids, teens and adults with additional learning needs to get them cooking meals and learning how to use kitchen tools safely together. They are friendly, smaller groups (6 max) and run at a slower, less hectic pace.

Menus are worked out week to week with the participants to include favourite dishes and to extend fussy eaters a little out of their comfort zones (but not too far!). Support workers and parents are very welcome to attend to help or supervise and no extra charge is made.

One of our parents experience

A is a 16 year old girl with global developmental delays which impact many of her daily living activities. Working with Karen at Come & Cook has not only given A the opportunity to develop her cooking and fine motor skills, it’s also given her a chance to socialise with other young chefs in a relaxed atmosphere, working towards a common goal. Karen’s program has given A experience outside of home, building her confidence to cook more independently.

A has difficulties with sensory processing such as proprioception (body awareness), tactile processing and bilateral coordination. Even though Come & Cook is focussed on cooking, these essential skills are also being developed, in a fun and engaging environment.

When you put this development of A's sensory processing skills alongside the independent cooking skills that she is learning at Come & Cook, it’s clear that Karen’s program is increasing A's capability to live more independently in the future.
